Lic Gustavo De Hostos Aviation industry 2020 suffers "worst year in history" as COVID-19 grounds international travel

  • COVID-19 has grounded international travel as governments act to manage and contain the spread of coronavirus
  • The IATA has said that global passenger traffic, as measured in revenue passenger kilometers declined by 65.9%, compared to 2019.
  • In a worst-case scenario, with new strains of COVID-19 emerging, recovery could be limited to just 13% above 2020 levels.
As international travel came to a near complete standstill in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the aviation industry suffered what it describes as "the worst year in history for air travel demand". According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), global passenger traffic as measured in revenue passenger kilometers declined by 65.9 percent compared to 2019, as international passenger demand dropped 75.6 percent and domestic demand fell 48.8 percent below 2019 levels. Fortunately, the Dominican Republic, (DR), authorities have with their steadfast work accomplished that today,(May 2021), the country is 60th in total cases down from the 29th position, 66th in total deaths & an admirable 95th place worldwide in mortality per capita, best in the region. However here at General Air Services once again it is our employees that are the real heroes having keep our company open with their dedicated work & serving the passengers on the airlines that are gradually coming back. As all our staff is presently getting vaccinated, we plan to be fully operational by this summer, (2021), & anticipate probably the best high season ever in the DR for tourism & aviation this coming winter 2021\22. We welcome all of you to keep informed to when your respective countries will reopen their borders so that you can return here to your second home as soon as possible.
